ZonaD must go on. “Make dance happen”
fundraising campaign

Citeste in limba romana

We opened ZonaD – Serial Paradise studio in June 2012, as a lab-space dedicated to contemporary dance and arts, with a programme focused on professional development, artistic research and audience development. In a difficult political and cultural context for contemporary arts, we assumed the risk, the responsibility and the passion to support a new artistic space in Bucharest. ZonaD is administered by Gabriela Tudor Foundation (former Project DCM Foundation), a pioneer organisation in the field of contemporary dance, with over 15-year activity.

Since we open the space, the time went by quickly, full of the many things we made happen, of both the joy and hard work to have a space in Romania. As ZonaD gained its recognition on the artistic scene, the context for contemporary arts has progressively deteriorated, leaving us now in the impossibility to project on the long term the existence of the studio, though extensive projects are ongoing until 2015.

We would like to continue ZonaD story in 2014, but we won’t be able to make this happen without your support, of all those who joyfully benefitted from the space and of all those who strongly believe in the benefit brought about by independent spaces, by the diversity of artistic proposals and their contribution, sometimes invisible on the short term, but essential on the long term, to the development of contemporary arts in Romania. Through our ongoing projects we have already raised an important part of the needed funds to continue our work in the ZonaD space, however these do not fully cover the costs of the studio in 2014. We value your support for the “Make dance happen” campaign and your contribution will also benefit from a gift we offer in return.

Please learn below what we’ve done until now, which our future plans are and how you can contribute to make ZonaD happen. Also, check out the ZonaD video, which introduces you to the space and the vision in which we work.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE
Between July 2012 – September 2013, we organised 10 contemporary dance workshops open to both professional and audience, 6 residencies for artists from Romania, Turkey, Great Britain, USA and Japan, the “E-Motional Festival: moving bodies & cities”, gathering artists from Romania, Ireland, Latvia, Great Britain, Cyprus and Turkey, as well as the first phase of the Romanian-Japanese collaboration project, Eastern Connection; 10 jam session evenings with live music and VJ-ing, 6 movie evenings, among which the Bucharest premiere of “Marina Abramovic. The Artist Is Present”. We also organised over 15 informal presentations and sharing of processes, performances and lectures, we supported 6 artistic research and professional development projects, also offering rehearsal space for their projects. Other over 25 events, contemporary dance and yoga classes and workshops were hosted at the studio, bringing a contribution to the studio.

ZonaD is also the studio of the Serial Paradise Company, led by choreographer Cosmin Manolescu. Under this label we organised a series of classes and experimental workshops and two new productions have been developed "Hi Bye” (2012) and "Piece with limited responsibility” (2013).

ZonaD is also the informal headquarters of the Coalition of the Independent Cultural Sector (CSCI), a network of organisations active in the fields of performing and visual arts, by hosting meetings, roundtables and debates in connection with the advocacy actions undertaken by CSCI in support of the independent culture and contemporary arts (Charta for the Living Culture, www.culturavie.ro).

ZonaD has gradually become the home for all our projects, numerous connected events being permanently organised in parallel with the ongoing programme of the space. Approximately 2000 persons, artists and audience have benefitted from the existence of our space.

WHAT IS COMING UP IN 2014-2015
From 2013 for a period of 2 years, two large international projects are ongoing at ZonaD.

The first one is “E-Motional: rethinking dance”, which we undertake as lead organiser, together with partners Fabrica Movimentos (Portugal, Porto), the Association of Contemporary Dance Choreographers of Latvia (Riga) and “George Apostu” Cultural Centre Bacau (Romania), supported by the Culture 2007-2013 of the European Uniuon. The project is open to artists, dance professionals and audiences from partner countries and all over Europe, using as development basis the ZonaD space, and will include: interdisciplinary residencies, support for research projects, two international co-productions led by choregraphers Cosmin Manolescu (Romania) and Olga Zitluhina (Latvia), performances, dance classes and workshops, performance writing workshops, film screening and artist talks.

A second major project is “Eastern Connection”, a cooperation platform in the field of contemporary dance between Romania and Japan, in which Japanese choreographers will collaborate with Romanian artists in the frame of annual residencies at ZonaD, will hold workshops for both professionals and audiences and will present their work in Romania. The larger scheme of Eastern Connection includes the production of a group piece with the participation of artists Zan Yamashita, Cosmin Manolescu, Mihaela Dancs and dance writer Takao Norikoshi, as well as performances, lectures and workshops in Romania and Japan.

ZonaD will also host in 2014 the residency of an American choreographer, who will also hold a workshop open to dance professionals and audience. At the same time, Gabriela Tudor Foundation will continue to award the “Gabriela Tudor” Fellowship in cultural management, the following edition taking place in New York. The fellowship is annually awarded and has had up 5 beneficiaries up to now.

The continuation of ZonaD will allow the development in good conditions of all these projects that support both the dance professionals, by offering new jobs, new creation and professional development opportunities, and the audience, who will be able to benefit from an extensive programme of classes and workshops, as well as access to new cutting edge artistic projects.

MAKE ZONAD HAPPEN

CHALLENGES
In case the target amount shall not be raised, we will be in the situation to close the ZonaD space at the end of 2013 and to transform it in a mobile platform.

The announced awards shall be offered to all those who contribute, no matter if the target amount shall be raised or not, while the received donations shall be counted as co-funding for the E-Motional project, for which we need to bring 50% of the total budget, as well as for the ZonaD mobile platform.

The funding received for the on-going projects cover an important part of the ZonaD costs in 2014, but not all of these, and this is the reason why we need your support.

All contributions are welcome; donate so that ZonaD continues to exist. Make dance happen! Thank you very much for your support.
